Auto, Best, Fast or Saver: which mode to pick

What each mode is for, and how Auto keeps costs down without you thinking about it.

7 Nov 2026 · 2 min read · CodeStilt team
Feature

Every task runs in one of four modes. You can pick one per task, set a default, and hide modes you never use.

Auto

The right choice for most tasks. It plans with a fast model, does small edits with the cheapest model that can do them, and moves up to Best quality on a retry if your plan includes it. Available on Lite and up.

Best quality

For hard or large changes across many files, where getting it right the first time matters more than cost. Pro and up.

Fast

Everyday changes at a good price. Available on every plan, including Free.

Saver

Small, simple edits at the lowest cost: text changes, renames, small fixes. Available on every plan.

Your own key

On Pro and higher you can add your own Anthropic, OpenAI or Gemini key. Tasks that use it don't use CodeStilt credits; your provider bills you directly. The task page always shows the exact model used.
